Supercool Interactive Ad

If you are in your 20s or you just happen to still remember fondly loud music and partying, this interactive ad for Desperados Beer will appeal.  Unfortunately, I’m no longer in this demographic so I have to be happy with the fact that it is a very innovative way to use YouTube and combining overlays and interaction, etc.  The walls literally crumble and the ad expands the party.  Well worth the two minutes for the nostalgia factor alone!

Just some of the plans that Google is putting in place to improve the content on YouTube.  In related news, YouTube revenue has doubled in the last year based on Google’s latest earnings report.

The Telegraph bring us this article about how the FTSE 100 companies are not using Social Media enough and / or properly.  However, I think says more about the makeup of the FTSE 100.  All of these companies are 1) old, 2) asset heavy.  We should be complaining that there are not any social media firms in the FTSE 100!  One could argue that there are not any “new economy” companies in the FTSE 100 at all.  If the UK is going to make an impact in the global digital economy it isn’t about whether we are using Facebook, Twitter and YouTube properly but about how do we get something invented here to become a global product in the digital age.  Our problem, as an economy, is that we are not investing in people and companies that allow the “next big thing” in the social digital economy to be British made.  That Reckitt Benckiser only got 40 replies on its Facebook page is a red herring.

A big mix of news this week about connected TVs and the impact that they will have on the industry.

  • iPlayer comes to Blackberry
  • Nigel Walley from Decipher, tells us that “the future arrived yesterday” and that media agencies and standard ad formats are required to ensure that the industry can continue to be profitable
  • Samsung’s Dan Saunders announces that “killer app for TV is video [not TV]“.  The same article summarises the inability of BARB to be able to support the myriad of devices and delivery mechanisms.  Julian Dobinson from Sky discusses the importance of Sky View panel.
  • GoogleTV launches in USA and this report says that technical issues and being blocked by major broadcasters is halting the progress
  • Gidley’s Gossipings has posted his initial impressions of GoogleTV and reports that SeeSaw and 4oD both work out-of-the-box
  • Virgin Media announces more details about their TiVo / Broadband enabled box
  • Latest research from GfK is based on self-reported data (which is a bit dubious) but if you believe IP delivered content is the future, this data supports it saying that about a third of viewing is from online sources and another third from PVR.

A round up of this week’s money news:

Sometimes, however, I think that the lure of venture capital is the lie of our generation.  Doesn’t it sometimes feel like the “gold rush” all over again?  Only the success stories make the papers – it is like the lottery.  The press only report the two blokes who sold YouTube for $1B – not the 10,000 schmucks who lost their life savings and didn’t even get to round 1.

Anyway, here is a great tribute / spoof video (depending on your outlook).
