Even mainstream press picked up on this story so it is no news that Project Canvas has gotten the green light from the BBC Trust nearly 18 months to the date after being submitted.   Therefore, I’m offering you two super interesting links that are related – both from the unofficial Canvas blog.  This one is a word cloud of key words in the final Trust approval document.  Not only is it a pretty picture but also shows the focus on content.

For those who are more interested in how this will impact the rest of the broadcast industry (in my view, significantly, now that Sky have to share some of its premium channels and Virgin no longer have channels), there is this link to a chart showing how Canvas’s nearly £50M in marketing spend stacks up against the rest of the industry.  I am already lobbying to drop my Pay TV subscription….

This is one of the longest running advertising campaigns I can remember.  Here is a link with one that even had Gary Coleman in it.  Anyway, the commercials revolve around getting men to do simple tasks (e.g. put own dirty glass in the dishwasher) for a reward of a Klondike bar (usually men as that is their target market).

Well, move over Klondike because this machine here will give you FREE ice cream in exchange for your privacy.  And who cares about that right?  It is just a little picture that is posted onto Sapient Nitros Facebook page and open to be image searched by Google.  At least you don’t have to put your name on it.

I would rather pay £1.79 and be anoymous….

I’m constantly hearing about new forms of navigation and how all consumers really want to do is search by show name and watch a whole series of IT Crowd.  (Series 4 has just started by the way and it is hilarious as ever.)

So, I thought I would post this article from Forrester blogs.  It provides a summary of the types of people on social networks – creators through to joiners and spectators.  Not surprisingly, most of the people on social networks are along for the ride.  My hypothesis is that it is even worse on TV.  When working on fancy new ways to navigate the volume of content that will come with Internet connected TVs, don’t forget that most of us just sit down and be spectators.
